Part-Time Facilities & Exhibits Assistant

Children’s Museum of Acadiana | Lafayette, LA
Pay: $12–$14 per hour, depending on experience
Reports to: Exhibits & Facilities Manager

The Children’s Museum of Acadiana is seeking a dependable, hands-on Facilities & Exhibits Assistant to help care for our museum campus. This position is responsible for routine cleaning inside and outside the museum, while also supporting exhibit repairs, preventive maintenance, and facility projects. The right person takes pride in a clean space, notices problems before they grow, and enjoys fixing things in a place built for children to explore.

What you’ll do

• Clean and sanitize restrooms, exhibit spaces, play areas, offices, and shared spaces using appropriate products and procedures.

• Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, clean glass, remove trash, and restock paper products and other supplies.

• Keep entrances, sidewalks, outdoor play areas, and the surrounding campus free of litter and debris.

• Check exhibits, furniture, fixtures, and play materials for loose parts, damage, wear, or other safety concerns.

• Complete basic handyman tasks such as tightening hardware, replacing parts, assembling furniture, patching and painting surfaces, and making minor repairs to exhibits and building fixtures.

• Help maintain interactive exhibits so they remain clean, functional, and inviting for visitors.

• Assist with moving furniture, setting up rooms, and preparing spaces for programs and events.

• Keep tools, equipment, and maintenance supplies organized. Communicate needed repairs and supply shortages to the Exhibits & Facilities Manager.

• Follow safety procedures, including keeping tools, chemicals, and work areas secure around children and visitors. Refer work requiring a licensed professional or specialized training to the manager.

Skills and experience

• Hands-on repair experience is required. You should be comfortable using common hand and power tools and completing basic carpentry, assembly, painting, hardware replacement, and general repairs.

• Experience cleaning a public facility and using cleaning chemicals safely is preferred.

• Able to spot maintenance and safety issues, determine what can be repaired, and clearly report work that needs additional help.

• Able to follow a cleaning schedule while shifting priorities when an urgent spill, repair, or visitor need comes up.

• Careful workmanship and attention to detail, especially in spaces and exhibits used by young children.

• Able to work independently, manage time well, and communicate with museum staff about completed and outstanding tasks.

• Able to stand and walk for extended periods, bend, reach, climb a step ladder, lift and move supplies or furnishings, and work outdoors in varying weather.

Schedule: Part-time; hours to be determined.

Weekend Play Facilitator

Pay: $9–$11 per hour, depending on experience
Schedule: Part-time, weekends

The Children’s Museum of Acadiana is looking for a friendly, energetic Weekend Play Facilitator to help families make the most of their visit. Play Facilitators welcome guests into exhibit spaces, encourage children’s curiosity, and help keep the museum safe, organized, and ready for the next discovery.

What you’ll do

• Greet children and caregivers, answer questions, and help them explore museum exhibits.

• Encourage hands-on play by asking questions, demonstrating activities, and supporting children as they try new things.

• Lead or assist with simple activities and weekend programs.

• Monitor exhibit areas, reinforce museum rules kindly, and respond promptly to safety concerns.

• Reset exhibits throughout the day by organizing materials, replenishing supplies, and cleaning frequently touched surfaces.

• Help families navigate the museum and create a welcoming experience for guests with different needs and abilities.

• Communicate visitor feedback, damaged materials, and other concerns to a supervisor.

• Assist with opening, closing, and special events as scheduled.

Skills and qualifications

• Enjoys working with children and can engage with families in a warm, patient, and respectful way.

• Comfortable speaking with guests, answering questions, and giving clear directions.

• Able to take initiative, stay attentive in a busy environment, and work as part of a team.

• Interested in play-based learning, creativity, and hands-on exploration.

• Experience working with children, families, education, museums, camps, or customer service is preferred.

• Able to stand and walk for much of a shift, bend to interact with children and reset exhibits, and move activity supplies.
